From the press release type thang, dept:

BRAVIA Internet Video Link Will Allow Viewers to Watch Premium Video From
Grouper.Com
LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ — (CES Booth #14200) — Grouper
Networks Inc., one of the fastest growing user-generated video communities
on the Internet, announced today its role as one of the channels on Sony
Electronics’ new TV feature — the BRAVIA Internet Video Link — unveiled
today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The optional module
will allow the newest BRAVIA Sony televisions to access a wide array of
premium Internet video content available through Sony’s Internet video
service.
Owners of Sony Internet video-ready HDTVs, available in 2007, will be
able to view some of the highest quality user-generated content from the
Web via a small optional module easily attached and concealed behind the
TV. Video on the Grouper channel on BRAVIA Sony televisions will be higher
resolution than video found on Grouper.com and will be appropriate for all
ages. Content from Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony BMG Music, as well
as other providers will also be available.
“This exciting partnership reinforces Grouper’s leadership in
distributing video of all types across different platforms,” said Grouper
co-founder and co-president Josh Felser. “Grouper’s channel on the Sony
‘BRAVIA’ Internet Video Link brings enhanced quality user-generated video
content into the living room and makes it possible for people to have more
control over what and where they watch.”
The module links the television set directly to a user’s broadband
Internet service provider via an Ethernet connection. Sony Internet video
content can then be accessed directly on the TV without use of a personal
computer.
The BRAVIA Internet Video Link will initially be supported by Sony’s
BRAVIA S-series flat-panel LCD high-definition television line, which was
also announced today. The new TV models include the KDL-46S3000,
KDL-40S3000, KDL- 32S3000 and KDL-26S3000 units — all shipping this
spring.
The “BRAVIA” Internet Video Link module will be available this summer
and pricing is expected to be announced within the next few months.

Yet another use for the PS3

Sony: PlayStation 3 Can Help Cure CancerWednesday, November 22, 2006TOKYO — The new PlayStation 3 isn’t all about entertainment. That’s the message Sony Corp. (SNE) is trying to convey in announcing that the new game consoles — as powerful as supercomputers — can help Stanford University researchers analyze complex human protein structures and perhaps find cures for cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and other ailments.

Thousands of die-hard gamers and entrepreneurs lined up last week to buy the sleek PS3 machines when they went on sale in the United States on Friday.

Police had to disperse rowdy crowds at some stores, and in Connecticut, authorities said two armed men tried to rob waiting customers and shot a man who refused to give up his money.

Sony Computer Entertainment says that when Cure@PLAYSTATION 3 is launched, PS3 owners can register their machines with Stanford, download specially designed software and leave their machines online to process data when they’re not playing.

It’s modeled after existing programs in which personal computers process high-volume data for signs of extraterrestrial life and other tasks. PCs already contribute to the Stanford medical research program.

Sony said data processing time can be up to 20 times faster with a global network of PS3s, which are fitted with advanced Cell processors that can perform billions of calculations per second.

The program will kick off after the PS3 becomes available globally.

PS3s already are on sale in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the United States; the European launch was delayed until March because of production problems.

Yes, yes, the Grouper team went down to Hollywood to attend the premiere of Stranger than Fiction. Our intrepid reporting team scored interviews with all the stars and has graciously shared their video memories with you and me on Grouper. Check out the swanky interviews with Will and Dustin. I’m told the part where Julie blurts out a marriage proposal to Will and then faints dead away was mercifully edited out by Andrew. Dang!

What’s coming up soon on Grouper.com you ask? Plenty. First we’ve got these election thingees to get past and then immediately after Grouper and Sony will bring you something to take your mind off of all that yacking and fighting — Sony Movie Classic (to be granted a swankier name by launch date, I promise) film and TV clips.

This just in. I swear, even as I was pressing the post button, execs were pounding their way down the hallway waving a piece of paper that held the big decision. The New channel will be called ScreenBites. Look for it to appear on Grouper.com next week.
